Passive and Active Fire Protection

There are two types of fire protection systems: Active Fire Protection and Passive Fire Protection

Active Fire Protection

Active Fire Protection systems are characterised by items which require a certain amount of motion and response in order to work. Examples that are common across buildings in the UK include:

  • Fire / Smoke Alarms
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Sprinkler Systems
  • Fire Extinguishers

Passive Fire Protection

Passive Fire Protection organises a building into smaller compartments (compartmentation) which consists of one or more rooms or flats. Compartments prevent the spread of a fire from the room of origin to other building areas, thus limiting fire spread and damage and helping to portect lives. Common fire protection products linclude:

  • Fire Doors
  • Fire and Smoke Barriers
  • Structural Fire Resistant Elements – walls & ceilings
  • Shutters
  • Access Panels and Hatches
  • Ducts and Dampers
